Juneteenth Art Exhibition Set for Abbot Kinney Boulevard

The Event Features Works by Twelve Prominent Black Artists From Los Angeles

An art exhibition titled “FREEDOM” will open at 910 Abbot Kinney Blvd. in Venice from June 16 to June 23, 2024, commemorating Juneteenth. Organized by Black in Mayberry in partnership with ESMoA, the event features works by twelve prominent Black artists from Los Angeles.

The exhibition reflects on the African American journey toward freedom, honoring lives lost in the struggle and celebrating those who fought for today’s freedoms. “FREEDOM” invites visitors to explore contemporary interpretations of freedom through art, addressing issues such as mass incarceration, police brutality, and educational inequities.

Through their work, the artists raise questions about the true meaning of freedom in today’s society, challenging viewers to consider both physical and psychological constraints imposed by systemic and internalized racism.

Juneteenth marks the end of slavery in the United States, commemorating June 19, 1865, when Union General Gordon Granger announced the emancipation of enslaved people in Texas. This day is celebrated as Freedom Day.

Black in Mayberry, a nonprofit organization, aims to combat racism through art by creating programs and events that address systemic racism and anti-Blackness. ESMoA, known for its experimental approach to exhibitions and community engagement, collaborates on this project to foster creative thinking and social awareness. Proceeds from the exhibition will support Black in Mayberry’s initiatives against racism.
