The production brings to American audiences for the first time the story of two royal brothers—Dara and Aurangzeb—locked in a power struggle for control of the Mughal Empire
Santa Monica College will host the United States premiere of Dara, a historical drama set in 17th-century Mughal India, with performances running from May 23 through June 1 at the Theatre Arts Studio Stage on the college’s main campus.
Directed by SMC Theatre Arts professor Perviz Sawoski, the production brings to American audiences for the first time the story of two royal brothers—Dara and Aurangzeb—locked in a power struggle for control of the Mughal Empire. Originally written by Shahid Nadeem and adapted by Tanya Ronder, Dara first premiered in the U.K. at London’s National Theatre in 2015. The play was originally produced by Pakistan’s Ajoka Theatre.
Set in 1659, the drama explores themes of power, faith, and identity, as Crown Prince Dara—beloved by the people and the emperor—clashes with his younger brother Aurangzeb, who pursues a more austere and puritanical vision for the empire. Their sister Jahanara, a central figure in the story, struggles to reconcile the family’s internal conflict.
Performances will be held at 7:30 p.m. on May 23, 24, 30, and 31, with matinees at 2 p.m. on May 25 and June 1. All performances take place at the SMC Main Campus, 1900 Pico Blvd., and are subject to change or cancellation.
Advance tickets are available online at smc.edu/tickets, priced between $20 and $25 ($18 for SMC students and staff), plus a service charge. Tickets purchased at the box office on performance weekends will cost an additional $3. Parking is free, and additional transit information is available at smc.edu/transportation.
