The SMPD deployed resources from its SMART Center, including a drone, while the Los Angeles Police Department provided air support

Santa Monica police arrested a man Monday after he was reported to be holding what appeared to be a firearm on an Interstate 10 embankment near 17th Street, prompting a temporary closure of the freeway in both directions.

The California Highway Patrol notified the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) of the incident earlier in the day. Officers responded to the scene, where the suspect fled beneath the 17th Street bridge before surrendering to authorities. Police later determined the weapon was a BB gun, which was found nearby.

No injuries were reported during the incident. The SMPD deployed resources from its SMART Center, including a drone, while the Los Angeles Police Department provided air support. The I-10 was closed for approximately 30 to 45 minutes but has since fully reopened.

Authorities have not released the suspect’s identity or additional details about the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
