Locals’ Night on Pier Postponed Amid Rain and Wind Forecasts

The original Nov. 20 date was to include a Thanksgiving food drive, but that has been dropped in favor of the December holiday

Organizers have postponed Thursday’s Locals’ Night at the Santa Monica Pier because of expected bad weather and rescheduled the free community event for Dec. 18 with a full holiday theme.

The Santa Monica Pier Corporation announced the change Tuesday, citing forecasts of rain and wind. The original Nov. 20 date was to include a Thanksgiving food drive, but that has been dropped in favor of the December holiday edition.

The rescheduled event will run from 3:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and feature holiday lights, a “Sandy Cane Lane” décor display, a winter artisan market, live music, family activities, a visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a sand sculpture of Santa. Bob Baker Marionettes will perform at Pacific Park, and kids can paint ornaments inside the historic Merry Go-Round building.

The pier corporation, a nonprofit that operates the landmark independently of city funding, will also hold an unofficial “mayor transition” ceremony during the December gathering.

“Weather occasionally changes our plans, but our commitment to bringing people together never does,” said Jim Harris, the pier’s executive director.

Free tickets are required and will be available through Eventbrite closer to the new date.
