The expansion is part of the city’s two-year Realignment Plan renewal, approved unanimously by the Santa Monica City Council in October. The plan includes $60 million for service restorations
The Fairview and Ocean Park branch libraries will reopen for in-person, full-service operations three days a week beginning Jan. 20, expanding beyond their current self-service model as part of Santa Monica’s Realignment Plan.
The return to full service means both branches will offer librarian staffing, technical assistance, library services, programs and events for the public and library cardholders.
The expansion is part of the city’s two-year Realignment Plan renewal, approved unanimously by the Santa Monica City Council in October. The plan includes $60 million for service restorations, street improvements, safety investments and business support aimed at revitalizing the city.
“Fully restoring service at the Fairview and Ocean Park Branch Libraries is about getting back to what residents expect and deserve,” Mayor Caroline Torosis said in a statement. “Through the Realignment Plan, we are making deliberate investments in everyday services that strengthen neighborhoods, support learning and make Santa Monica a better place to live.”
Under the new schedule, the Fairview Branch Library, 2101 Ocean Park Blvd., will be open with full service Tuesdays and Wednesdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Ocean Park Branch Library, 2601 Main St., will offer full service Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Reopening celebrations are planned at the Fairview Branch on Jan. 20 and at the Ocean Park Branch on Jan. 21, both from noon to 2 p.m. City leaders will be available to welcome patrons and answer questions about the Realignment Plan and library services. The events are free, open to all ages and do not require reservations.
The Realignment Plan also calls for further restoration of library services. Beginning in July 2026, the Fairview, Ocean Park and Montana branch libraries are expected to increase full-service operations to four days a week. The Montana Branch will continue its self-service hours alongside expanded full service, while the Main and Pico branches will maintain their current schedules.
“The unanimous approval of the Santa Monica Realignment Plan reflects a renewed sense of optimism and momentum for our city and the services we provide,” said Library Services Director Erica Cuyugan. “This milestone represents a meaningful step toward restoring the services our residents rely on.”
