Big Blue Bus to Mark Start of Electric Fleet Project with Groundbreaking Event

Officials said the project will support the continued transition of the city’s bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles by adding advanced charging capabilities.

City officials are set to mark the start of construction on new electric bus charging infrastructure at Big Blue Bus headquarters, part of an effort to expand zero-emission public transit in the region.

The event, organized by the Santa Monica Department of Transportation, is scheduled for April 9 from 10 a.m. to noon at the agency’s facility on 6th Street.

Officials said the project will support the continued transition of the city’s bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles by adding advanced charging capabilities. The construction is expected to play a role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and modernizing transit operations.

A ceremonial groundbreaking is planned as part of the event, with local officials and transportation stakeholders expected to attend.

Santa Monica has been working to expand its use of electric buses in recent years as part of broader climate and mobility initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and improving air quality.
