Five events are scheduled, including performances at the Downtown Santa Monica Metro Station, Reed Park, Palisades Park, Colorado Center Park and Beach South Lot 1.

Santa Monica will host a series of free concerts and community music events on June 21 as the city launches its own chapter of Make Music Day, an international celebration held annually on the summer solstice.

The event, now branded as “Make Music Santa Monica,” marks a shift from the city’s previous participation in the broader Make Music Los Angeles program. City officials said Santa Monica has participated in the global initiative since 2012.

Five events are scheduled throughout the city, including performances and music-related activities at the Downtown Santa Monica Metro Station, Reed Park, Palisades Park, Colorado Center Park and Beach South Lot 1.

The largest gathering is expected to take place at the Downtown Santa Monica Metro Station and adjacent Kiss & Ride parking lot from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The city said the event will feature live performances, participatory music sessions and arts workshops. Organizers also plan what they describe as the first live music performances on a Metro platform and inside a Big Blue Bus as part of the day’s activities.

Additional events include a concert and community jam session at Reed Park, a beachside music event in Ocean Park, performances by local musicians in Mid-City and a family-oriented gathering in Palisades Park.

Make Music Day began in France in 1982 as Fête de la Musique and has expanded into a worldwide event observed in hundreds of cities. Organizers say more than 800 cities in over 100 countries now participate.
