St. Monica Falls Short:

The goal of St. Monica’s football team this season was to be competitive.

The Mariners have accomplished that feat, coming close to victory five times in seven games. However, their four-season losing streak reached 36 games on Saturday, October 25 when a second half comeback fell short.

St. Genevieve, which led 32-7 at halftime, survived St. Monica’s rally for a 32-27 victory at St. Bernard High. St. Monica had a final opportunity with 13 seconds left, but was 60 yards away from the end zone, and that was simply too far.

St. Genevieve now has a 6-2 record. St. Monica is 0-7.

Coach Sean Ritter, who was disappointed in his team’s execution the previous week, was more upbeat this time.

“Our team has played tough all season but suffered from poor execution,” he said. “This time, in the second half, it showed a lot of character. And the players saw what they are capable of doing.”

Mike Holubowski scored two touchdowns on passes from Joe Giesregen, and Hector Sanfiesteban scored another on a 40-yard run.

St. Monica will have a bye on the last weekend of October, and will then have one more chance to avoid a winless season when they play Salesian.
