Samohi’s Team Marine students erected their REthink Artwork on the Third Street Promenade on Sunday, February 15- member Megan Kilroy is seen on the right. The stunning artwork (23’ x 4’ x 7’) was made using 34,727 bottle caps and over 240 used pizza boxes along with other items such as styrofoam reclaimed from the dumpster to bring attention to the global marine debris crisis and our society’s addiction to single-use plastic products. Marine biology teacher Benjamin Kay is their club advisor and has inspired many creative environmental activism projects. Team Marine is currently competing in this year’s Edison Challenge, and environmental science eco-competition sponsored by USC and Southern California Edison. They are partnered or collaborating with the Jane Goodall’s Roots and Shoots Program, the Surfrider Foundation, Heal the Bay, the Algalita Marine Research Foundation, 1 Bag at A Time, Generation Earth, Plug in America, the Friends of Ballona Wetlands, the Ballona Institute, and Samohi’s SAGE group, and the Heal the Bay Surfrider and SSA Clubs.
