The Santa Monica High girls’ tennis team defeated league-rival Beverly Hills in a very close contest. Because, at the end of the day, each team had won the same number of matches, the decision came down to a tie-breaker, number of games won. Samohi prevailed, having won 77 games to 69. Beverly Hills was last year’s CIF runner up and has been the league champion for as long as anyone can remember at Santa Monica. With this win, Santa Monica is likely to maintain its current ranking as No. 3 in CIF. “The girls worked hard during the off-season and the results reflect their efforts,” said head coach, Winston Poon. “They seem to be improving with each meet.” Every Samohi varsity player contributed to the victory because each won at least one match. Singles players Katerina Mozolyuk and Kayla Shapiro, and the doubles duo of Sabina Norton and Carly Brown, each won two. Presently, Santa Monica is undefeated in league play and it will meet up with Beverly Hills again on October 22.
