After a few small bumps early in the schedule, Samohi’s boys varsity soccer has seemingly hit stride. The team opened in November with an easy 5-0 win over Palisade Charter and a scoreless tie against Beverly Hills. In early December, the Vikings were bested by Lynwood and always tough Loyola, only to bounce back with a four-game streak without a loss. The team was particularly tested by a spell of three matches in three days last week. On December 15 the Vikings beat Cabrillo Long Beach 4-0, the next day they won a friendly against a visiting team for Canada 3-0, and last Friday the Vikings tied Palos Verdes 1-1. The sole Palos Verdes goal came on a penalty kick in the second half, and the Vikings rallied with a late game goal to earn the tie. Excepting the PK goal, the Vikings defense did not call a goal in four straight games thanks in part to defense sweeper Daniel Hulbert and keeper Michael Freedman. Up front, striker Richard Martinez has been instrumental in the Viking attack. Co-captains for the squad include keeper Freedman, Christian Marcial, and
Janish Narain. Serafin Rodriguez is Head Coach for the boys varsity at Samohi. League play begins against Paramount, a home game at John Adams Middle School at 3:30 p.m. on January 8.
