Entertainment Stars Help Launch Teaching Garden:

The CW’s 90210 star Jessica Stroup, professional volleyball player Gabrielle Reece, renowned athlete Laird Hamilton, Nickelodeon’s Victorious star Daniella Monet, along with Teaching Garden founder and Hollywood philanthropist Kelly Chapman Meyer launched the nation’s second Teaching Garden at the Will Rogers Learning Community School on April 26 at 14th Street in Santa Monica.

The Teaching Garden is a place where teachers and principals with community partners from the entertainment, sports and food industries, the Farmer-Veteran Coalition and GrowingGreat come together to create school community gardens – living laboratories that help children learn about food harvesting and sustainability, nutrition and the importance of physical fitness. A national program bringing an innovative, hands-on nutrition and fitness curriculum to young children, the event will bring together Create The Good volunteers and talent for a day of service to teach students how a few small changes in diet and exercise can make life-saving differences.

In this garden, students through the simple process of putting a seed into the earth, nurturing it, and ultimately harvesting the food, learn about effort and results, delayed gratification, and cause and effect. The ultimate goal: hands-on exploration of life sciences that leads to one’s positive choices for health and fitness. (www.takepart.com/teachinggarden)

The day of service was part of a larger effort within AARP Create The Good and Entertainment Industry Foundation’s iParticipate volunteer campaigns.
