Among Nation’s:

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital was ranked among the nation’s best hospitals, according to a U.S. News and World Report survey that reviewed patient-outcomes data, reputation among physicians and other care-related factors for thousands of medical centers across the United States.

The rankings appear online at usnews.com/besthospitals as well as in the magazine’s August print edition as part of its 2010-11 review of “America’s Best Hospitals.”

The magazine put almost 5,000 hospitals under the microscope to create its 16 specialty category rankings that range from cancer and heart care to neurosurgery and urology. The rankings in 12 of the 16 specialties were driven by hard data such as death rates, procedure volume and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. In the four other specialties – ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation and rheumatology – hospitals were ranked on reputation alone.

Only 152 hospitals nationwide managed to be ranked in even a single specialty. Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital was ranked in two specialties: neurology /neurosurgery and orthopaedics.

“The rankings are another sign of progress in transforming our Santa Monica campus into an evolving academic medical center that maintains its longstanding tradition of community care,” said Posie Carpenter, chief administrative officer. “We can offer patients the best of both worlds – the expertise of an academic medical center, combined with the personalized and patient-friendly services of a community-based hospital.”

Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Westwood ranked as one of the top five American hospitals – and best in the west – for the 21st consecutive year. The Reagan facility is also the only hospital in Los Angeles and the Southern California region that appears on the magazine’s “Honor Roll,” which recognizes a smaller group of 14 hospitals that received points for demonstrating excellence and ranking at or near the top in many specialties.

UCLA Health System provides the best in health care and the latest in medical technology to the people of Los Angeles and the world. Comprised of Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital, the Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA, Mattel Children’s Hospital UCLA and the UCLA Medical Group, with its wide-reaching network of primary and specialty care offices throughout the region, UCLA Health System is among the most comprehensive and advanced health systems in the world.
