Summer Showcase Celebrated At The Boys And Girls Club Of Santa Monica:

A crowd of parents and children gather in the gym during the summer showcase at the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Club on Tuesday.

The Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica held its annual summer showcase Tuesday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate the conclusion of its summer program. Parents had the opportunity to meet the staff as well as observe the activities taught to their children.

It included interactive and teachable components of technology, sporting events, art, contests, computers, and a paper airplane design contest.

With membership just $20 a year, this program, sponsored in part by the Pacific Youth Foundation, allows children in the community to be recognized for their constructive growth and educational development.

“I love making a positive impact on the kids’ lives,” said Brandon LaBrie, Main Branch Director for the Boys and Girls Club of Santa Monica and who was responsible for handing out the certificates. “I love seeing them smile, grow, and learn.”

The theme for this year’s summer showcase was “Back to the Future,” and featured a variety of hands-on projects and interactive games that focused on the historical significance of events in the 20th century.

A graduation ceremony was also held for teens that had successfully completed the Leaders in Training summer program and volunteered in the community.

“They (teen members) have meetings for training as well as workshops during the summer program,” said Jason Hurd, Director of Teen Programs. “This gives teens the opportunity to prepare for the job world by giving them school and social skills.”
