On Thursday, August 26, at 3:56 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department responded to Step Up On Second, located at 1328 2nd Street, in response to a report of a man who was threatening another man with a knife.
When they arrived at the scene the officers spoke with the staff members of Step Up On Second (a facility that provides psychosocial rehabilitation and support to people affected by severe and persistent mental illness) who told them that the suspect, a homeless man, had engaged in an argument with another man in the restroom at the facility.
The argument had escalated and the suspect had produced a small knife that had the handle missing, and had threatened the other man with it.
The staff told the officers that they had intervened and disarmed the suspect, at which point the suspect had calmed down and cooperated with them.
This 37-year-old man was arrested and charged with brandishing a dangerous weapon. His bail was set at $25,000.
