Fatal Santa Monica Hit-And-Run Investigation Continues: Passerby says he recognized victim as a transient who panhandles at the intersection

Santa Monica detectives are continuing to investigate who struck and killed a pedestrian in Santa Monica at 5:50 a.m. on Wednesday morning at the intersection of Lincoln and Santa Monica Boulevard.

SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said the victim was a white male aged between 65 and 70.

Lewis said case was still under investigation and the name of the victim has not been released pending notification of family.

The victim was walking eastbound in the south cross walk on Santa Monica Boulevard crossing Lincoln, apparently against a red light.

Lewis said the suspect was driving southbound Lincoln Boulevard in the number one lane, who had a green light when they went through the intersection, struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk, and failed to stop and remain at the scene.

He said the suspect’s vehicle was a 2009 to 2011 charcoal grey Toyota Camry.

“It’s going to have damage to its right front hood, right front fender, and right front passenger mirror,” Lewis said.

Jay Kyle, who drives through the area daily on his way to work, told ABC7 he recognized the victim as a transient who panhandles at the intersection.

“I just saw the guy lying here, and I think it’s the same thing he had on two days ago,” Kyle told the ABC7 reporter.

Anyone with information is urged to call police at 310.458.8495.
