Santa Monica City Council Ballot Deadline Extended To Wednesday, August 15:

The Santa Monica City Council nomination period has been extended to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday

Santa Monica City Council hopefuls now have until 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 15 to pull papers and submit their petition. Close of business today was the initial deadline, but five extra days has been added as Mayor Richard Bloom nor Council member Bobby Shriver pulled papers by today’s 5 p.m. deadline.

Seven candidates have qualified for the Santa Monica City Council ballot, but that number is likely to increase as it may take until Tuesday for the LA County’s Registrar’s office to verify four candidates who submitted petitions Thursday and today. Those four are former NBC4 news producer John Cyrus Smith, Planning Commissioner Ted Winterer, Incumbent Terry O’Day, and Jonathan Mann.

To qualify for the ballot, candidates are required to have at least 100 registered Santa Monica voters sign a petition. However, a registered voter can only sign four petitions and the registrar will invalidate any signatures submitted after the first four.

The seven candidates who have qualified for the City Council race include Incumbent Gleam Davis, Santa Monica’s first Latino council member Tony Vazquez, local activist Jerry Rubin, newspaper columnist Frank Guber, attorney Steve Duron, entertainment consultant Terence Later, and attorney Robert Seldon.

In all, there are four open City Council seats open, which have been held by Bloom, Shriver, Davis, and O’Day.
