Santa Monica Public Library presents the Sixth Annual Green Prize for Sustainable Literature ‘Words of Wisdom: Reading into Action’ next Saturday, Sept. 22 at 11 a.m. in the Main Library’s Martin Luther King Auditorium.
Take part in a fascinating discussion on how reading can lead to action, transforming knowledge into power.
A panel of environmental leaders will discuss the challenges within the green movement and ways that everyday heroes are addressing them. The event will be followed by a zero-waste reception featuring vegetarian snacks and light refreshments.
Panelists include:
— Jordan Howard, Environmental Your Activist and Educator;
— Damon Nagami, Senior Attorney, Natural Resources Defense Council; and
— Professor Daniel Blumstein, Chair of the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at UCLA and co-author of The Failure of Environmental Education (And How We Can Fix It), and Eating Our Way to Civility: A Dinner Party Guide.
The 2012 Green Prizes are offered in eleven categories. There is at least one category for every Santa Monica reader – all ages all levels of interest.
The 2012 Green Prize Pioneer Award, which honors a writer who has paved the way for discourse on sustainable issues, will go to Paul Hawken, environmentalist, activist, entrepreneur, and the author of many books including the 2008 Green Prize-winner Blessed Unrest.
The Green Prize for Sustainable Literature was established to encourage and commend authors, illustrators, and publishers who produce quality books that make significant contributions to, support the ideas of, and broaden public awareness of sustainability.
The City of Santa Monica’s Sustainable City Plan defines sustainability as “meeting current needs – environmental, economic and social – without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same.”
This event is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and on a first arrival basis. The Santa Monica Public Library is wheelchair accessible.
