Folklórico de SMC Does World Dance Program:

Folklórico de SMC, which has performed throughout California and Mexico, will present a program of world dance, “East-West, Now and Then,” at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, May 20 and 21 at the Lincoln Middle School Auditorium, 1501 California Avenue in Santa Monica.

The program will include dances from China, Indonesia, Africa, and Mexico, as well as Latin mambo and hip-hop numbers.

“This will be an outstanding program whose intent is not solely to entertain but to represent the rich diversity of cultures that is a proud part of our college community,” said dance professor Judith Douglas, Folklórico de SMC co-artistic director. “All of the performed dances are kept in their authentic forms. They preserve particular world cultures as well as educate our students and audiences of their beauty and legitimacy.”

Faculty and guest choreographers are Douglas, Raquel Ramirez, who is also Folklórico co-artistic director, Ron Brown, Sergio Reyna and Sri Suslowati. Student choreographers are Gabriel Avila and Jing Li.

The mission of Folklórico de SMC is to train performers, educate audiences, and disseminate information about the rich history and lore of Latino and other cultures. For more than 15 years, the troupe has toured extensively in California and Mexico, appearing at schools, festivals, and special events.Tickets for this performance are $15 general admission and $10 for SMC students with I.D. Open Mind Art Space is pleased to present The Man Who Loved Flowers:
