Man Runs Light In Front Of Santa Monica Cop, Tasered After Fighting With Back Up: Alert Police Blotter: Don’t Taze Me Bro’

A 29-year-old Los Angeles man who ran a red light in front of a police officer then tried to fight with backup was tasered and then arrested on Thursday, Oct. 18.

At 11:28 a.m. an officer from the Santa Monica Police Department was on routine patrol in the area of Lincoln Boulevard and Pico Boulevard when he saw a red Cadillac that had been stopped at a red light pointing northbound on Lincoln Boulevard, suddenly accelerate through the red light for no apparent reason.

This, as most people know, is a violation of 21453 (a) California Vehicle Code.

The officer conducted a traffic stop on the Cadillac in the 1800 block of Lincoln Boulevard and asked the driver for his license. The driver informed the officer that he did not possess a driver’s license.

The officer checked on his computer and discovered this man’s license was expired and that he was on summary probation for driving without a license.

By this time another officer had arrived at the scene and had asked this man to exit his vehicle.

The man was then asked to put his hands behind his back, and at this point the man suddenly spun around towards the officers displaying clenched fists.

The officers then began to wrestle with this man as he repeatedly made attempts to assault them.

A third officer arrived and this officer deployed his X26 Taser in order to get him down to the ground.

The officers, in spite of this man’s continued kicking and struggling, managed to handcuff him and they all placed him securely in the back of a police vehicle.

As this man had been the target of the X26 Taser, the officers stopped at a local hospital so he could be checked out prior to being booked.

The doctors passed the man as being fit for arrest and so the officers took this Los Angeles man off to jail where he was charged with obstructing officers, being an unlicensed driver, driving through a red light, failing to provide proof of insurance and violating probation.

Bail was set at $10,000.

Editor’s Note: These reports are part of a regular police coverage series entitled “Alert Police Blotter” (APB), which injects some minor editorial into certain police activities in Santa Monica. Not all of the Mirror’s coverage of incidents involving police are portrayed in this manner. More serious crimes and police-related activities are regularly reported without editorial in the pages of the Santa Monica Mirror and its website, smmirror.com.
