Santa Monica College To Celebrate Campus Diversity This Week:

International Education Week will be celebrated at Santa Monica College starting today, Nov. 12 continuing through Friday with a lively festival, an evening with an Oscar-nominated filmmaker, an engaging lecture on China’s auto industry, and more.

All events are free, and the public is invited.

“International Education Week is a time to celebrate our diverse campus community, which includes more than 3,200 international students from more than 100 nations,” said International Education Dean Kelley Brayton. “It’s also a time to put a spotlight on SMC’s dynamic Global Citizenship Initiative, which not only educates students in world affairs but also seeks to ensure that our students become responsible global citizens.”

The lineup of events, all held on the main SMC campus at 1900 Pico Blvd., is:

Tuesday, Nov. 13 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Drescher Hall Room 214):

Lecture – “CLAC-ing Across the Curriculum: Lessons Learned.” Dr. Judy Krutky, a visiting professor of political science at The Rand Corp. in Santa Monica, will talk about ways to integrate culture and language into many disciplines. Krutky is a professor of political science and international studies at Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio.

Thursday, Nov. 15 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Campus Quad):

Global Citizenship Day Festival, featuring a kaleidoscope of free food, music, games, and dance performances by SMC’s Global Motion World Dance Company. Information will also be provided on how campus departments are engaged in SMC’s Global Citizenship initiative.

Thursday, Nov. 15 from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (Humanities & Social Science Lecture Hall 165):

Lecture – “Designated Drivers: State Capitalism in China’s Auto Industry.” Speaker GE Anderson is an author, consultant and former international finance executive whose research focuses on business-government relations in Asia, state-owned enterprises, and China’s auto industry. He has taught at the University of Chengdu and provides advice in political risk mitigation, business-government relations and business strategy to firms ranging from Silicon Valley startups to Fortune 500 multinationals with operations in East Asia.

Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. (Humanities & Social Science Room 165):

“An Evening with Oscar-Nominated Filmmaker Christine Choy.” SMC film studies professor Salvador Carrasco will lead the conversation with Choy (his former professor at NYU) and screen excerpts from her impressive filmography, which spans all continents and raises all kinds of thought-provoking global issues. Choy is an NYU film professor and a Guggenheim, Rockefeller and Fulbright Fellowship recipient.

The SMC International Education Week events are sponsored by the SMC International Education Center, Global Citizenship Initiative, Department of Communication/Film Studies, and Department of Modern Languages and Cultures.

SMC is one of the many organizations nationwide that will celebrate International Education Week, a joint initiative of the U.S. State and Education Departments.
