Former SMC AD McGarvin Dies at 80:

Tom McGarvin, a former star USC athlete who was athletic director at Santa Monica College in the 1970s, has died.

McGarvin passed away last week in Rancho Mirage. He was 80.

In 1940, McGarvin became the only athlete in USC history to play against Notre Dame in both football and basketball. He played on the last Trojan football team coached by Howard Jones that season and the first Trojan team to reach the NCAA basketball tournament.

A memorial service is planned July 7 in Santa Monica.In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in McGarvin’s name to the USC Athletic Department.
