In response to today’s decision by the Supreme Court of the United States in United States v. Windsor (striking down the Defense of Marriage Act) and Hollingsworth v. Perry (dismissing for lack of standing the appeal of Judge Walker’s decision striking down Proposition 8-California’s Constitutional Amendment to Ban Same Sex Marriage), Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica) issued the following statement:
“I applaud the US Supreme Court for its courageous and historic rulings today. These dual rulings will give respect and dignity to millions of gay and lesbian Americans. The decision is pivotal for Californians and a historic step forward in the struggle for full marriage equality across the country.”
Richard Bloom represents California’s 50th Assembly District, which comprises the communities of Agoura Hills, Bel Air, Beverly Hills, Brentwood, Hollywood, Malibu, Pacific Palisades, Santa Monica, Topanga, West Los Angeles, and the City of West Hollywood.
West Hollywood and the 50th Assembly District include one of the largest and most active LGBT communities in the United States.
In 2008, Proposition 8 was rejected by 86 percent of the City of West Hollywood’s voters.
