Santa Monica Residents To Celebrate Spring Equinox With Tree Hugging Day Event:

The annual Tree Hugging Day public gathering in Santa Monica will once again take place today on the Spring Equinox at the Children’s Tree of Life.

Tree huggers of all ages are invited from 6 pm to 7 pm to join in a group tree hug around the specially designated “peace tree,” which is located in the Santa Monica Palisades Park at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue just north of the Santa Monica Pier.

Participants will also be invited to “branch out” and give hugs to other trees in the nearby park area.

The Children’s Tree of Life was planted on Earth Day, April 22, 1983 at a public peace celebration.

In 1984 the tree was officially proclaimed “a living monument to world peace” by late Santa Monica Mayor Ken Edwards.

The theme of this year’s event is “Let’s bring tree hugging back by popular demand.”

Santa Monica activist and event organizer Jerry Rubin said like Earth Day, Tree Hugging Day should be every day.

“Tree Hugging Day is a positive opportunity to remind people of the importance of caring for our trees and our environment,” Rubin said.
