Although Santa Monica College’s football team lost for the second consecutive week, Coach Robert Taylor was far more optimistic this time.
SMC lost its home opener last Saturday, 38-17 to Fullerton College, which is ranked sixth in Southern California. The previous week SMC was crushed at Victor Valley, 42-14.
“We competed very well against a strong team,’’ said Taylor. “I see daylight. Last week I only saw a candle.’’
SMC led 10-6 at halftime and was tied, 17-17 in the third quarter. Former Santa Monica High star Joe Young then returned a blocked kick 40 yards but the play was called back because of a penalty. Fullerton took charge from there.
Mitch Smith, the quarterback at St. Monica last season, divided time and completed eight of 16 passes for 73 yards. Young made five solo tackles, running back Jon Weaver had 58 yards on five carries, and receiver David Whaley caught five for 63 yards.
“Even though we lost, we showed we can compete against anybody,” said Taylor.
On Saturday night at 7, SMC will begin play in the Western State Conference Southern Division against Citrus, which also has an 0-2 record.The Corsairs got off to a slow start last season but won their final five games.
