For the month of May, the Santa Monica Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement Unit will focus on unsafe speed violations.
The SMPD focuses on different driving behaviors each month that are primary causation factors for traffic collisions.
SMPD Lt. Trisler said he wanted to remind everyone that while the posted sign will state the speed limit, the conditions for the road may warrant a lower speed.
“If it raining outside, the posted speed limit may be too fast,” Trisler said. “Please be safe while driving.”
The California Vehicle Code – Section 22350 Laws Applicable to Basic Speed Law states:
No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.
