Jim McDonnell will be sworn in as the boss of the fourth-largest police agency in the nation as he takes the helm of the Los Angeles County’s Sheriff Department Monday.
The former appointed chief of the Long Beach Police Department will be sworn in at the county’s Kenneth Hahn Hall of Administration, 500 W. Temple St., at 2 p.m. Monday.
McDonnell is the 32nd sheriff since the office was founded in 1850.
With 9,100 sworn officers added to nearly that many civilians, it has a total of 18,000 employees. That ranks it among police agencies smaller only than the municipal police in New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
The LASO provides law enforcement in unincorporated areas, in marinas and in 42 of the 88 municipalities in Los Angeles County, from near Wrightwood to Catalina Island.
