Weather officials warn of dangerous humidity and warm overnight temperatures.

Dangerously hot and humid conditions are gripping Southern California this week, prompting weather officials to issue an extreme heat warning for much of Los Angeles County as temperatures climb past 100 degrees.

The National Weather Service warning took effect Tuesday morning and is scheduled to remain in place through Thursday evening. Forecasters warn that high humidity levels will amplify the heat risk, while exceptionally warm overnight temperatures will offer little relief. Even though temperatures will be lower on the Westside and the coastal areas, humidity levels are still in the mid-eighties.

County emergency officials are urging residents to prepare for the extended heat wave and actively check on vulnerable neighbors, including infants, outdoor workers, and older adults.

To stay safe during peak heat hours, officials recommend the following precautions:

  • Seek Air-Conditioning: Stay indoors during peak sunlight hours from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.. Residents without home air-conditioning are encouraged to utilize public libraries, cooling centers, and community facilities.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink two to four glasses of water every hour when exposed to high temperatures, and avoid alcohol, which accelerates dehydration.
  • Protect Vulnerable Passengers: Never leave children or pets unattended in parked vehicles, even briefly, as cabin temperatures can rapidly reach fatal levels.
  • Limit Outdoor Exertion: Reschedule strenuous physical activity to early morning or late evening hours, and wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing.

You can find a list of cooling centers here. Residents who observe individuals showing signs of heatstroke, such as a high body temperature, confusion, or a rapid pulse, should call 911 immediately.
