The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Child Development Services (CDS) Department, which oversees the district’s preschool programs, has announced that it has a new logo.
Last summer, SMMUSD revealed its new logo to represent the entire school district. During that logo development process, one design was considered a finalist that, while ultimately not chosen to represent all of SMMUSD, was selected to symbolize CDS.
“The new CDS logo is bright and playful,” said Superintendent Sandra Lyon. “While it was ultimately decided during our district logo competition last year that the look and feel of this particular logo could not represent all of our grades levels up through high school, we felt that it perfectly embodied the spirit of our youngest students.”
The new CDS logo was designed by Susanne Manheimer, Owner + Creative Director of CRU smartdesign, with input from Ni Glynn, a Santa Monica resident who was also involved with the original SMMUSD logo process.
Manheimer’s and Glynn’s names will be featured on materials related to the CDS rebranding process.
“The logo is based on the playfulness and the freedom of a child and the cities of Santa Monica and Malibu,” said Manheimer.
Prior to this reveal, the school district’s preschool program did not have its own logo nor consistent graphical representation.
“We felt that it was important to have an image that encompassed all of our preschool and school-age programs, collectively,” said Dr. Alice Chung, Director of CDS. “SMMUSD’s Child Development Services is a collection of programs throughout Santa Monica and Malibu that are designed for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age children. CDS offers fee-based as well as no-cost or low-cost options for financially-eligible families.”
Chung added, “This new logo visually brings all of the CDS programs together under the SMMUSD umbrella.”
