“Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies” Stays On Top At Box Office:

“Hobbit: The Battle Of Five Armies” entered 2015 as the firm box office champion, with a $21.9 million weekend projected today.

In three weeks of exhibition over the Christmas period, the sequel had a running total of $220.8 million in ticket sales in the United States and Canada, according to studio figures gathered by analysts at Rentrak.

“Into The Woods” was number two, in its second week of showings, with a $19 million weekend and $91.2 million in domestic ticket sales to date.

Third place was held by “Unbroken,” with a weekend tally of $3.2 million and an estimated take of $87.8 million over its two weeks of showings.

The only debut of the week opened in fourth place. “Woman In Black 2: Angel Of Death” was estimated to deal $15.1 million worth of tickets.

Rounding out the top 10 movies at the U.S. and Canadian box offices, as estimated by the studios and collated by Rentrak, were “Night At The Museum: Secret Of The Tomb” ($14.5 million). “Annie” ($11.4 million). “The Imitation Game” ($9.1 million). “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1” ($7.7 million), “The Gambler” ($6.3 million) and “Big Hero 6” ($4.8 million).
