Edman’s 6 TDs Lead Malibu Past St. Monica:

Miles Edman gained 1,500 yards as a reserve for Malibu High last year, so a great deal was expected from him this year.

He hasn’t disappointed, leading the team in rushing throughout the season, and he was at his best Friday in a 46-14 victory over St. Monica.

Edman scored six touchdowns, five by rushing and one on a pass reception from quarterback Bennet Sherman. He carried the ball 19 times and gained 216 yards.

Malibu (4-4) has alternated a win and a loss all season and will try for its first two-game winning streak in a homecoming game Friday night against Santa Clara High.

“It’s been up and down with a full range of emotions,” said Ray Humphrey, who became the head coach this season following 12 years as a Santa Monica High assistant.

With Malibu dominating on the ground Sherman wasn’t required to do much passing but completed all five of his attempts.

Malibu built a 40-0 lead as several St. Monica players were affected by the flu. The Mariners had only 16 players available for the second half.

St. Monica (1-7) went to a shotgun offense late in the game with star receiver Anthony Flores taking direct snaps as the tailback. Flores scored two touchdowns.

“We may have found something for our final two games,” said Coach Jason Strouse.

Plagued by injuries and illness throughout the season, St. Monica was again without star running back Vince Valdez, who is out for the season with a separated shouder.

Strouse, who has kept a positive attitude through a difficult season, said he’s encouraged by future possibilities because the Mariners’ frosh-sophomore team has shut out its last two opponents.

St. Monica will have a home game (St. Bernard High) against St. Anthony Saturday night.
