Schreiber, Brentwood Are Impressive In Victory:

In terms of assets and challenges, the Brentwood School boys basketball team’s situation is similar to that the school’s football team faced last fall. The Eagles have a star player and solid supporting cast but they play in a challenging league. Considering the competition, Brentwood’s teams do pretty well. Led by running back Kevin Yamazaki, the football team won eight games and qualified for the playoffs. The basketball team reached the playoffs last season and won one playoff game. It had a chance to gain a share of the Olympic League championship on the final day, but lost and finished third. Led by 6-foot-9 Andreas Schreiber, who is heading for the University of Pennsylvania next season, the Eagles had four wins and four losses when they won a home game from Animo High of Inglewood last week, 91-49. The Eagles then headed for a holiday tournament in Maui. The team won’t play at home again until January  6, a non-league game against Village Christian. The first of two meetings with arch-rival Crossroads is scheduled January 20 in the Crossroads gym. Schreiber leads the team in scoring (15.4) and rebounding (9.6). Guard Maleek Royster, a relative of former major league baseball player Jerry Royster, is the second leading scorer at 8.7 ppg. Coach Peter Brey, who is 6-foot-8, played at the University of Wisconsin. He came to California three years ago, coached at Loyola High one season and guided Brentwood’s team last season. Schreiber is one of seven seniors on the team. In the win over Animo in Brentwood’s first home game of the season, Schreiber and 6-6 senior Ryan Winn used their height and skill to control a game that close only in the first few minutes and received help from 5-10 senior Michael Norton. Brentwood pulled away to a 49-20 halftime lead, with Schreiber scoring 17 points. He finished with 26 and didn’t play in the fourth quarter as the game became even more one-sided. League opponents include Harvard-Westlake and Campbell Hall, which usually field outstanding teams, and Crossroads, which usually dominates but has lost seven of its first eight games this season. Schreiber is a big man who moves well and has good hands. As the years go on and he plays against strong opposition on a more consistent basis he should become even better.Brey also fielded a unit of reserves who ran plays smoothly and shot well.
