SMC Presents Symphony, Jazz, Winds Concerts in October:

The Santa Monica College Music Department presents three fall concerts in October in The Broad Stage or The Edye at the SMC Performing Arts Center (Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street, Santa Monica). The concerts include an SMC Symphony performance, a Jazz Series performance by Tom Luer and Project Popular, and a performance by the SMC Wind Ensemble.

The October concerts are:

• Sunday, Oct. 18 at 4 pm in The Broad Stage: SMC Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of James Martin, Director. The orchestra’s 31st season opens with a concert featuring 12-year-old pianist Cassandra Carrasco performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 in A major (K. 488), and Mendelssohn’s classic favorite ‘Scottish’ Symphony No. 3 in A minor. (Tickets are $10.)

• Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 pm in The Edye: Jazz Concert: Tom Luer – Project Popular. Saxophonist/composer/arranger Tom Luer and the Los Angeles-based Project Popular jazz ensemble perform original compositions and jazz interpretations of pop and rock songs, including the music of Pearl Jam, Alicia Keys, Gotye, Sam Smith, and more. Part of the SMC Fall Jazz Series. (Tickets are $10.)

• Sunday, Oct. 25 at 4 pm in The Broad Stage: SMC Wind Ensemble, conducted by Kevin McKeown. The ensemble – featuring SMC students and musicians from the community – presents an exciting concert mixing both new and traditional music written specifically for wind instruments. (Tickets are $10.)
