Santa Monica History Museum Presents Hands on History Workshop for Children:

The Santa Monica History Museum is excited to invite children and their families to our FREE Hands on History workshop on Saturday, August 20th from 11am to 12 pm at the Santa Monica History Museum at 1350 7 th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

The theme of this workshop will be Pacific Ocean Park. In operation from 1958 to 1967 Pacific Ocean Park inspires many fond memories among Santa Monica Bay area locals. Designed as a competitor to Disneyland, Pacific Ocean Park featured fantastical under-water and space-age inspired rides and attractions. Join us on Saturday, August 20th to learn more about this wonderland of amusement that once stood on the beach south of the Santa Monica Pier.

After a lesson in the galleries, attendees will use paper tearing art techniques to make their own representations of seaside entertainment. Hands on History is offered by the Santa Monica History Museum on the 3rd Saturday of each month from 11am to 12pm. Each session includes a history lesson and a correlated craft or activity. Each workshop is designed to be engaging and educational for elementary age (5 – 11 years) children. Topics for the workshops will rotate throughout the year to feature relevant, seasonal lessons and activities. RSVP is requested, registration is available at the door. Every workshop is offered free of charge. Please see the attached flyer for dates and themes of upcoming workshops in the series.

Founded under the Historical Activities Committee of the Santa Monica Centennial Celebration in 1975, the Santa Monica History Museum is a “Santa Monica Treasure.” Originally known as the Santa Monica Historical Society we are the official collector and preserver of the history, art, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area.

The museum’s historical collections are comprised of over one million items including the personal historical collection of Senator John P. Jones, co-founder of Santa Monica; the archives of the Santa Monica Outlook Newspaper (1875-1998); the photo collections of well-known photographers Bill Beebe, Bob Smith, George Tate, Justine Hill, and author Fred Basten; and much, much more. The museum has six galleries and a research library located in a state-of-the-art facility adjacent to the main Santa Monica Public Library campus at 1350 7th Street, Santa Monica, CA 90401.

The Santa Monica History Museum is an incredible resource and partner in the community. We preserve, protect, and promote the rich history of Santa Monica. The museum is open to the public five days a week and we curate seasonal and special exhibits throughout the year in addition to our permanent exhibits. We offer extensive free educational programing including guided school tours, children’s workshops, internships, and volunteer opportunities. Our research library and team of researchers provide the public with access to detailed historical information upon request.
