Noted soccer physician Dr. Bert Mandelbaum has won the United States Sports Academy with the 2006 Dr. Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award.Mandelbaum, who practices in Santa Monica, has worked at Pepperdine for 15 years and been medical director for major league soccer since its debut in 1996.He was chief medical officer for the United States women’s World Cup soccer teams in 1999 and 2003 and has been team physician for all of the U.S. men’s national soccer teams since 1991.Prior to going to Pepperdine, he was team physician for UCLA for four years. He has also been a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of Sports Medicine, The Physician and Sports Medicine as well as an executive board member for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.Mandelbaum is featured in and helped produce the video: “Ready, Set and Play: Injury Care and Prevention in Youth Soccer,” which received an award from the International Medical Film Society. He has also been a contributor to ESPN Sport Zone and was the orthopaedic surgical consultant to the CBS television drama “Chicago Hope” from 1997 to 2001.Inaugurated in 1994, the Ernst Jokl Sports Medicine Award is part of the Academy Awards of Sport Medallion Series. Past winners include four-minute-mile runner Roger Bannister and five-time Olympic speed skating gold medalist Eric Heiden.
