Signups Now Open for Winter Break Tech Workshops

Does your child or teen love technology? Are they looking for something to do over Winter Break? The Santa Monica Public Library Teen Advisory Council invites local kids and teens to participate in our technology workshops, which will be held during the first week of January 2017 at the Main Library.

Tech & U is a series of three 60-minute classes for kids aged 6-10 years. Kids may sign up for individual classes or all three. All Tech & U classes start at 2 p.m. in the Children’s Activity Room. The classes are:

Build Your Digital Armor, Tuesday, January 3. For kids who like to play computer games. Come learn how to make smart decisions that keep you safe and protect your privacy.

Create Your Best Digital Self, Wednesday, January 4. Create your own avatar and explore ways to be totally awesome with yourself and others online.

Be Inspired Online, Thursday, January 5. Mix your own movie. Learn how to find cool images, sounds, and other great content for your projects and how to tell whether something is fair-game to use.

For teens, there are two Winter Break Teen Tech Workshops for grades 6-12. Teens may sign up for both workshops or just one. Both workshops take place in the Main Library Computer Classroom. No prior coding experience required. The workshops are:

Make Literally Anything with Code, Thursday, January 5, at 3 p.m. This workshop lasts one hour. Learn how to use simple, easy-to-understand HTML5 and CSS (cascading style sheets) to display photos, music and videos online. Taught by Santa Monica Public Library staff member Joe Delaplaine, who has taught popular computer classes at SMPL’s How-To Festivals and is a professional graphic designer.

Video Game and App Development with Unity 3D, Saturday, January 7, at 1 p.m. This half-day workshop is four hours long. The hands-on class introduces the fundamentals of video game and app development. Bring a flash drive so you can save your work. Taught by Matt Fairweather, veteran game designer and founder of Torrid Games.

To register, visit or call the Main Library Youth Services Desk at 310.458.8621. Space is limited, so don’t delay! All programs are free. If classes fill up, no walk-ins will be accepted.

The Main Library is located at 601 Santa Monica Boulevard, Santa Monica, CA 90405. Registration is required. For more information, the public can call the Main Library at 310.458.8600, or visit the Library’s web site smpl.org
