New Pirates of the Caribbean Movie Debut Sails Past Competition at $78.5 Million

Captain Jack Sparrow landed atop the North American box office over the long holiday weekend, as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales” easily sailed past the competition at theaters, according to final figures released Tuesday.

The latest “Pirates” film debuted with $78.5 million over the four-day holiday period from Friday through Monday, according to box-office tracker comScore.

Another Disney film, “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” placed a distant second with $27.2 million. The film has earned more than $340.5 million in its four weeks of release.

The comedy “Baywatch,” based on the former television series, debuted in third place with $23.1 million. Director Ridley Scott’s sequel “Alien: Covenant” took fourth with $13.4 million, followed by the teen drama “Everything, Everything” with $7.7 million.

Rounding out the top 10 films of the weekend were “Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul” ($6.1 million); “Snatched” ($5.1 million); “King Arthur: Legend of the Sword” ($4.3 million); “The Boss Baby” ($2.5 million); and “Beauty and the Beast” ($2 million).
