Alert Police Blotter 5/22/17-5/26/17

By Tim Broughton

Unreasonable.

On Wednesday, May 24, at 2:30 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were called out to attend to a report of an assault that had happened in the area of Fourth Street and Bay Street. The officers met the victim near the intersection of Fourth Street and Pico Boulevard. The victim was a juvenile and told the officers that he had been riding his skateboard near Bay Street when the suspect had approached him and for no apparent reason, grabbed him by the back of the shirt and punched him one time on the side of his face. The victim told the officers that after the attack he had decided it would be wise to leave the area and so, accompanied by his friends, left the area and called the police to report the assault. The victim gave the officers a detailed description of the suspect (homeless looking, bedraggled, about 50 something, miserable demeanor etc.) and the officers went in search of this individual. It didn’t take long for the officers to spot a man fitting the description and after the victim had confirmed that this man was in fact the exact individual who had allegedly assaulted the juvenile the officers arrested the suspect. The suspect, aged 43 of no fixed abode, was later charged with inflicting corporal injury upon a child and annoying and/or molesting a child under 18 years of age. Bail was set at $50,000.

He Laid Pipe.

On Wednesday, May 24, at 2:33 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department were requested to attend to a possible assault that had occurred in the area of Sixth Street and Colorado Boulevard. The officers were informed that a deadly weapon of some kind had been utilized in the assault. The officers arrived at the location and spotted a man standing in the street with a metal plumbing pipe. The officers ordered this man to drop the pipe but the man refused to do so. The officers persevered, applying their police skills, including patience and repetitive persuasion and after a while this man dropped the pipe. The officers then detained this man and searched him. The officers discovered that this man was in possession of locking knife that had been concealed inside his pant pocket. The officers then interviewed numerous witnesses at the scene and were told that this suspect had been involved in a verbal altercation with another man (victim) and after a considerable length of time the suspect had picked up the metal pipe and had swung it at the victim several times with the apparent intent of striking the victim. The pole did not strike the victim. The officers arrested the suspect, aged 52 and homeless, and he was later charged with carrying a concealed dirk or dagger in addition to the seemingly ubiquitous parole violation. Bail was not granted.

Packing Packages.

On Thursday, May 25, at 5:25 a.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department received a radio call informing that a suspicious person had been seen loitering in a subterranean garage in the alleyway of the 1500 block of 10th Court. The reporting party told dispatch that as he was exiting the garage he saw a man run out of the property. He said the man appeared to be attempting to leave before the gate had closed. When the officers arrived at the location they spotted a man who fit the description that they had been given so they stopped this individual and began to ask some questions. During the questioning the officers noticed that this man was carrying several bags and the officers asked the man if they could look inside the bags. The man agreed to this request so the officers looked inside and discovered that the bags contained numerous boxes that were addressed to residents of the apartment building. The officers also noticed other similar packages that had been strewn around the inside of the garage floor. The man could not explain why he was in possession of these packages so the officers arrested this 27-year-old resident of an unknown place and he was charged with burglary and a violation of probation. Bail was not granted.

Girls Night Out In Jail.

On Thursday, May 25, at 10:42 p.m. officers of the Santa Monica Police Department responded to a call regarding a residential burglary in progress at a vacant property located in the 1200 block of Palisades Beach Road. The reporting party had told dispatch that they had seen lights on inside the house accompanied by loud noises emanating from the residence. When the officers arrived at the location they secured the perimeter of the building and observed numerous females moving around in illogical patterns on the third floor of the building. The officers used the bullhorn fitted to their vehicle to get the attention of this group of females and commanded these females to exit the property slowly and in an orderly fashion. The females were taken into custody without incident. The officers then inspected the property and discovered numerous broken windows and forced entry points so they arrested two of these females, one aged 17 years and from Sylmar, and the other aged 23 from Palmdale. Both were later booked for burglary with each being granted bail of $50,000.
