Holocaust Film Discussion, SMC,

A day-long series of screenings of critically acclaimed, international films on the Holocaust, culminating with a panel discussion featuring Holocaust scholars.

10am-1pm in Science Lecture Hall 145: Screening of Alain Resnais’ Night and Fog, the 1955 French documentary that features newsreel footage and original film to expose the horrors of the concentration camps and Hitler’s “final solution.” That will be followed by a screening of the Oscar-winning documentary Anne Frank Remembered.

2-4pm in the Concert Hall: Screening of Walk on Water, the 2004 Israeli political thriller that explores the motives, strengths and, ultimately, the humanity of an Israeli assassin sent to rectify a wrong committed five decades earlier in Nazi Germany.

6pm in the Concert Hall: Screening of Imaginary Witness: Hollywood and the Holocaust, a documentary by Oscar-nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Daniel Anker. The film explores how American movies have shaped perceptions of the Holocaust and examines Hollywood’s complex relationship to the horrors of Nazi Germany from the 1930s through today.

The screening of Imaginary Witness will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Dr. Michael Renov, USC professor of critical studies and author of several books.
