Hatch Chile Season About to Start

Gelson’s is just one local venue preparing for Hatch Chile season; an event strongly celebrated across Santa Monica.

Hatch Chile peppers are almost roasting, marking the beginning of the highly anticipated Hatch Chile seasonal celebration. On Fridays & Saturdays from August 11-September 8, Gelson’s with hold weekly events including complimentary onsite roasting, sampling of favorite hatch chile recipes, contests and giveaways.

Grown in Hatch, New Mexico, Hatch Chiles are a mildly hot and savory pepper that, when perfectly roasted, yields a uniquely delicious flavor, both spicy and sweet, offering a flavor pop that enhances a range of recipes. While its Hatch Chile Festival annually attracts thousands of visitors from around the world to this small farming community every Labor Day weekend, Gelson’s brings its own festival to pepper-loving customers across Southern California.

During this brief season each year, Gelson’s hosts “Hatch Chile Roasting Events” at specific Southern California locations.  Activities include sampling Hatch Chile specialty items, learning about the growing process from produce experts, and receiving cooking ideas from Gelson’s staff. Among its special Service Deli items, try the Hatch Chile Cornbread, Hatch Egg Salad, Hatch Chili/Grilled Corn/Heirloom Tomato Salad, Mini Quiche Hatch Chile, or the Cream of Hatch Green Chile Soup. Gelson’s staff will also be roasting fresh Hatch Chiles for free to include in home recipes: from omelets and baked chicken to salsa and guacamole.

Hatch Chile roasting will take place on Fridays, 3-7 p.m. and on Saturdays, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
