Honoring Santa Monica Firefighters, Firetrucks

By Staff Writer

September is Firefighter Appreciation Month and this past Wednesday M Street Kitchen in Santa Monica showed their support for these heroes by donating a portion of their sales to the California Fire Foundation (CFF) and the Santa Monica Fire Department (SMFD).

“Firefighter Appreciation Month (FFAM) is a time when businesses, celebrities and individuals acknowledge the work of our local firefighters by raising money for some of the Foundation’s key educational, financial, and emotional support initiatives,” wrote the CFF in a press release. “Statewide businesses, celebrity supporters will help raise money and awareness for fallen CA firefighters, their families and the communities they serve.”

On Wednesday, September 26, the SMFD was at M Street Cafe on Main Street, giving tours of two modern fire trucks and one vintage 1950s rig. The rig was in use from 1952 to 1980 and the SMFD is currently crowdsourcing to restore this truck back its original form.

“It was recently purchased by the Santa Monica Firefighters Relief Fund and will become a showpiece for the community. Our goal is to raise money and restore it to near perfect condition. We are looking to partner with local businesses as well as citizens to help us reach our goal. Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to this worthy cause,” The Santa Monica Firefighters Relief Fund writes on their website.

In addition to giving tours of fire rigs old and new, firefighters talked with guests, answered questions and provided insight on what being a firefighter is like in Santa Monica.

Afterward, firefighters from Santa Monica Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 6, and Truck 1 enjoyed a dinner at Stella Barra & M Street Kitchen for pizza and dinner.
