Closing Celebration for Hispanic Heritage Month Today

This Friday, October 15, the Santa Monica community is invited to a closing ceremony for Santa Monica’s first Hispanic Heritage Month celebration. The event will be held in front of City Hall, 1685 Main Street, at 3:30 p.m. (speakers and awards presentation at 3:30 p.m.).

The fun will include music, dance, a mini lowrider car show, and art. There will also be a resource fair and vaccination clinic onsite. The Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee, comprised of City of Santa Monica staff, are also excited to present distinguished Santa Monicans from the Latinx community with awards for their leadership and dedication to Santa Monica. The awardees were nominated by fellow residents, community members, and colleagues over the last month.

The goal of the Hispanic Heritage Month’s Steering Committee has been to begin to emphasize and celebrate the diversity of all Hispanic, Latino/Latinx people, beginning with this month-long celebration, and to build on that momentum throughout the year, by offering events that foster economic mobility, networking opportunities, and economic recovery resources.

The October 15 event closes out a series of events that kicked off on September 15, all aiming to meet this goal. The month-long series included virtual discussions, movie screenings, literary events, mercadito (night market), cultural dance and music, and so much more.
