Palisades’ Nikolova Wins City Tennis Championship:

Junior Katy Nikolova of Palisades High has won the L.A. City girls individual tennis championship.

Nikolova, who was top-seeded in the competition, defeated second-seeded Sarah Cohen of Taft High in the final match, 6-2, 7-5.

Although Nikolova doesn’t have the national credentials of CIF individual champion Logan Hansen of Brentwood School, her local achievement is noteworthy. She first led Palisades to the L.A. City team championship in November, then became the individual champ after losing in the finals a year ago to Desiree Stone.

Nikolova dominated the first set but fell behind in the second, 5-3, and had to fight off four set points before winning the last four games.

Nikolova had a 39-1 record for the season.

In the doubles final, the Palisades High team of Audrey Ashraf and Erika Lee lost to Rebecca Mesrophan and Betsy Uman of Taft, 6-4, 6-4.
