Tips for Prioritizing Your Mental Health

There are many reasons to focus on making your mental health a priority. It helps improve your mood, reduces anxiety, allows you to think more clearly, and it can help improve relationships. Having issues with your mental health is never anything to be ashamed of because, in reality, many people deal with these concerns, some just may not want to talk about it.

Take Time to Breathe

If there is something that’s bothering you, it’s always okay to hit pause and take a time out. In the heat of the moment, if something is upsetting you, give yourself time to step away from the situation and breathe. Sometimes it can make a huge difference to just focus on deep breathing techniques because those can help calm you down.

There are various breathing techniques you can practice to get comfortable with such as the 4-7-8 breathing technique visualization breathing, and alternate nostril breathing. Most of the time, individually naturally take quick shallow breaths. Just by taking the time to take slower and deeper breaths, you’re able to feel an almost immediate difference.

Spend Time With Friends

When your mental health isn’t feeling the best, it’s natural to want to crawl into your shell and hide from the world. You should not always turn to this coping mechanism though; it can help to reach out to your friends and spend time with them. Being around like-minded individuals can help prevent feelings of loneliness and isolation and help boost your confidence.

Sometimes it’s good to just kick back with a couple of close friends and enjoy some whiskey ice pops around a bonfire, just enjoying an evening together. Other things you can enjoy with friends include going to see a movie or a concert, going hiking, or taking a weekend trip to someplace you all would like to go to.

Consult Professionals If Needed

Mental health isn’t talked about nearly as much as it should be. Some individuals may still feel like it’s weird or not normal to need a professional to help them with mental health concerns. The truth is; that if you look at the numbers alone, 19.2 percent of adults in the United States received some form of mental health treatment in 2019.

Approximately one in four American adults will experience some form of mental illness at some point in their life. Getting professional help gives you the support system you may need to sort out what you’re going through. It also provides you a safe place to talk to someone who has experience offering professional advice to help you get through your daily struggles.

Figure Out Ways to Relax

Your mental health is counting on you to find time to relax. If you ever feel like you are on edge more often than normal and you feel tired and overwhelmed, that may be your body and your brain telling you that you need a break. Everyone needs to be able to take a break from time to time and do something relaxing such as taking a bath, going for a run, or taking a wellness weekend within a few hours of home. Even taking a nap can help make a huge difference in your life.

It’s good to allow yourself around three and a half hours of downtime per day. This means a time when you’re not working or cleaning or doing something that may cause you stress. This time is meant for unwinding and giving yourself a break to recover from the day. While it may not always be possible to get that amount of downtime in, you should try to make it happen whenever possible.

Your mental health is extremely important because it encompasses how you feel each day. If you’re under more stress than normal, it’s going to show in how you feel and act. You should find hobbies and things you’re passionate about so you can turn to those when you need a little break from life.
