SMC Emeritus Concert Band to Hold Free Concert

Concert planned for November 13 at The Broad Stage

Santa Monica College’s Emeritus Concert Band, under the baton of Yosuke Miyoshi, will present a free concert — “Giving Thanks” — on Sunday, Nov. 13, at 3 p.m. The performance will be held in The Broad Stage at the SMC Performing Arts Center, located at 1310 11th Street (at Santa Monica Boulevard), Santa Monica.

The special concert will honor the founding director of the Emeritus Concert Band — Wallace Umber — who passed away at the age of 96.

“The Emeritus Concert Band is forever thankful for his years of dedication to the band,” said Miyoshi, the current director. “We will gather together to create music in his memory.”

“What better way to celebrate the Thanksgiving season than to join us for a musical arrangement hand-picked for your enjoyment” said Dr. Scott C. Silverman, Associate Dean of SMC Emeritus. “It will be great to have the Emeritus Concert Band back in person. The students have waited a long time for this and are eager to have a live audience again. I know you will enjoy this afternoon show.”

Ample free parking will be available on the premises. Seating is on a first-arrival basis. Masks are currently required to attend on-campus events. COVID safety requirements are subject to change, however, so guests should see smc.edu/coronavirus for SMC’s latest requirements for vaccines and masks.

SMC’s Emeritus Concert Band is made up of musicians of a wide age range. The variety of musical and life experience that each band member brings to the group fuels an environment of ongoing inspiration. New members are always welcome, and can find out how to join by calling 310-434-4306.

The Concert Band has thrilled listeners with free concerts since 1979. The 60-member band is part of Santa Monica College’s acclaimed Emeritus program, established in 1975 to offer free classes and special programs to older adults.

More information is available at smc.edu/emeritus or by calling 310-434-4306.
