New Thrift Store Opens at Previous Location of “Black Ink” Along Swarthmore Ave

It Is the Latest to Replace a Store Around the Village That Closed Its Doors Last Year

By Zach Armstrong

A new thrifting experience is available to those on the Westside with the recent opening of Magoo’s just a short walk away from the Palisades Village.

Located at 869 Swarthmore Ave., Magoo’s is a buy/sell/trade establishment open to those in the market to stock up their wardrobe or exchange various clothing items for store credit or cash. According to its Instagram account, the store offers items from trendy brands including Yeezy, Nike, Adidas, Palm Angels, Gallery Department, Lacoste, Chrome Hearts, and others.

The store held its grand opening on Saturday, April 27.

The opening of Magoo’s comes nearly a year after the location’s previous tenant, fine stationery and gift store Black Ink, halted operations. The gift and holiday items shop was founded by former CBS news producer Patti Black in 1998.

“This past year we enjoyed the biggest sales EVER in the store. And the wholesale division of Black Ink grew three times over Covid! Lack of sales is not the reason I am closing.  After 25 years, it’s just time!,” Black said in an email to clients around the time of the store’s closing. She went on to plug Black Ink’s new gift website, which can be found at shop.blackinkca.com.

Last year, while Palisades Village experienced a slew of new openings from international luxury brands such as Saint Laurent and Isabel Marant, multiple smaller independent outposts surrounding the shopping district closed their doors. These included, in addition to Black InkCollection Antiques and Books along Antioch Street, Bellezza Exsuitie Lingerie along Vía De La Paz and Roco Pizza located within the Palisades Village.
Last month, Mirror Media Group reported the opening of the new Mavven Mercantile, a store offering workshops and fair trade items, which opened at the same location of the former Collection Antiques and Books.
