The rate adjustments will support routine Capital Improvement Projects, address inflation, and enhance water resiliency
The Santa Monica City Council adopted a new five-year water, sewer, and recycled water rate structure on June 10, 2025, following a public hearing.
The plan introduces an average 12% annual increase in water and sewer charges to fund critical infrastructure improvements while maintaining competitive rates compared to neighboring communities.
The rate adjustments will support routine Capital Improvement Projects, address inflation, and enhance water resiliency by rehabilitating the city’s four aging potable water reservoirs, aged 60 to 100 years, and replacing the outdated water operations center and quality laboratory, as stated in a post by the city.
These reservoirs, holding nearly 40 million gallons, ensure four days of water supply, maintain system pressure, and provide over 24 hours of fire-fighting capacity.
The new rates take effect July 1, 2025, and will appear on utility bills starting September.
