LA Metro Begins Restoring Wilshire Blvd. as D Line Subway Project Hits Milestone

The line will enable a 25-minute trip from Westwood to Downtown Los Angeles

The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (Metro) launched a major construction phase to restore Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, marking a key milestone in the Metro D Line Subway Extension Project. The effort involves removing over 700 concrete deck panels that have served as a temporary road surface at the future Westwood/UCLA subway station site.

The operation, set to run for 10 to 12 consecutive weekends through December, will use heavy equipment to clear the panels. Work will occur only on weekends to minimize weekday traffic disruptions, with eastbound Wilshire Boulevard remaining fully open. Westbound traffic will be detoured at Westwood Boulevard to Kinross Avenue or Ohio Avenue, while eastbound lanes will be reduced to two. Motorists are advised to plan for extra travel time through the busy Westwood area.

Once the panels are removed, Metro’s contractor will restore Wilshire Boulevard to its normal condition, allowing construction to shift inside the station. Details on the project are available at https://www.metro.net/projects/purple-section3/.

The D Line Subway Extension, Metro’s top transit priority, will extend nine miles from Koreatown to Westwood, featuring seven new underground stations in the Miracle Mile, Beverly Hills, Century City, and Westwood. Upon completion of all three sections by 2027, the line will enable a 25-minute trip from Westwood to Downtown Los Angeles, enhancing connectivity between the county’s two largest urban centers.
