County Supervisors Place Half-Cent Sales Tax for Health Services on June Ballot

County officials have said the additional revenue would support a range of health care services for residents who rely on the public safety net system.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted this week to place a proposed half-cent sales tax on the June primary ballot that, if approved by voters, would fund health care services for uninsured residents through October 2031.

The measure, titled the Essential Services Restoration Act for L.A. County, is intended to help offset anticipated federal and state funding cuts and support services including emergency and behavioral health care for people without insurance coverage.

Dr. Mitesh Popat, chief executive officer of Venice Family Clinic, said the proposal would help preserve access to care for low-income residents across the county.

“Federal and state funding cuts threaten care for patients in need across L.A. County and beyond — including working families, seniors and children — and this measure protects the essential safety net that keeps our communities strong,” Popat said in a statement.

County officials have said the additional revenue would support a range of health care services for residents who rely on the public safety net system.

The half-cent sales tax would remain in effect through October 2031 if approved by voters.
