Nightly one-way traffic controls set for Topanga Canyon Boulevard

Verizon begins fiber optic restoration between PCH and mile marker 1.8.

Nighttime commuters using Topanga Canyon Boulevard should prepare for new one-way traffic controls beginning Monday, March 23, as crews work to restore infrastructure damaged in the Palisades Fire.

The project involves underground trenching and replacing fiber optic cables lost in the blaze. Verizon crews will begin the work near mile marker 1.8 and move south toward Pacific Coast Highway.

The construction schedule and traffic impacts are as follows:

  • Monday through Friday (8 p.m. to midnight): Sections of State Route 27 between PCH and mile marker 1.8 will be reduced to a single lane. Traffic controllers will direct alternating Northbound and Southbound flow through the active work zone.
  • Nightly (Midnight to 5 a.m.): Work will continue within the existing full closure of State Route 27 (from PCH to Grand View Drive) currently maintained for Caltrans emergency repairs.
  • Sundays: Crews will operate between 12:01 a.m. and 5 a.m.

The trenching phase is expected to last between eight and 12 weeks, though the timeline remains subject to weather conditions.

Caltrans has noted these restrictions are separate from the ongoing one-lane traffic controls near mile markers 2.5 and 2.8, which remain in effect as needed for Caltrans crews. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution when navigating blind curves where traffic may be stalled, and are reminded that fines for traffic violations are doubled in active work zones.
